PuSonglingwasborninascholarlyfamily.Inhisearlyyears,healsowantedtousetheimperialexaminationtobecomeanofficial.Unfortunately,afterrepeatedattempts,hecouldonlymakealivingbyteaching.Hehasbeeninterestedinfolkstoriesaboutghostsandgodssincehewasachild.ItissaidthatPuSonglingonceopenedateahouseinfrontofherhouseinordertocollectmaterials,andpeoplewhocometodrinkteacanuseastoryinsteadofteamoney.Withthismethod,PuSonglingcollectedalargenumberofbizarrestories,aftersortingandprocessing,heincludedthemin"StrangeTalesfromaLonelyStudio".
AccordingtothenotesoftheQingDynasty,"ThreeBorrowingLuBiTan"records:PuSonglingwillshoponthesideoftheroadeverymorning,andsetupcigarettesandtea,waitingforpassersbytocollectstrangestories.EverytimeIhearsomething,IwillretouchitwhenIgethome.
InthefirstyearofKangxi(1662),PuSonglingbegantowritefoxghoststorieswhenhewas22yearsold.InthespringoftheeighteenthyearofKangxi(1679),40-year-oldPuSonglingassembledthemanuscriptsforthefirsttimeintoabookcalled"StrangeTalesfromaLonelyStudio",withNanGaoheng'spreface.Sincethen,therehavebeenfrequentadditions.Untilthethirty-ninthyearofKangxi(1700)andtheforty-sixthyearofKangxi(1707),therewerestillafewsupplementstothebook.Thewritingof"StrangeTalesfromaLonelyStudio"lastedmorethanfortyyearsanddevotedmostofPuSongling'senergy.

NieXiaoqianwasabeautifulfemaleghostwhoonlylivedtobe18yearsoldbeforeshediedandwasburiedinZhejiangNexttothedesolateancienttempleinthenorthofJinhuaCity,unfortunately,themonsterYakshathreatenedtoharmpeople.Later,NingCaichen,anativeofZhejiang,stayedinthemonasterytemporarily.Xiaoqianwasinstigatedbythemonsterandcametomurder,butwasmovedbytherighteousnessoftheCaichen,soshetoldthetruthtohelptheCaichenturnthecrisisintopeace.ChenchenalsotookcareofXiaoqian'strust,helpedherescapefromtheclutches,andtookherintoservehermotherandlong-illwife.Xiaoqianishardworkingandkind,andislovedbytheNingfamily.Becauseofherlong-termcontactwithlivingpeople,Xiaoqiangraduallybecamelikeanormalperson,andtheNingfamilynevermentionedheridentity.AfterNing'swifediedofillness,XiaoqianmarriedNingCaichenasaghostwife,andtheninstructedCaichentogetridoftheJinhuamonsterwhocametoretaliate.Afewyearslater,NingCaichenwasadmittedtotheJinshi,Xiaoqianalsogavebirthtoason,NingCaichenalsogavebirthtoaconcubine,Xiaoqian,andtheconcubineeachgavebirthtoason,andallthreesonsgrewup.Peopleoffame.

"LiaozhaiZhiyihuiSchoolMeetingCommentaryEdition",or“ThreeMeetings”forshort本”、张友鹤著,收录491篇,中华书局1962年初版,上海古籍出版社1978年版,四册,后又曾相继出过上下二册的精装本以及普及本等。
张友鹤先生以半部手稿本和铸雪斋抄本为主要底本详尽会校、会评和会注的“三会本”,为《聊斋志异》的研究起了开创性作用。20世纪60年代由中华书局出版后,便备受学者专家和读者的关注,迄今此一版本仍有相当参阅价值。限于时代条件,当时未有机会见到后来发现的二十四卷抄本以及更全和更为接近原稿的《异史》,因而此一版本的缺点和不足也就显露出来。
全本新注聊斋志异
《全本新注聊斋志异》,朱其铠著,三册,494篇,人民文学出版社1986年版,后曾多次印刷。
朱其铠20世纪六十年代初开始整理、研究《聊斋志异》,曾参加当时山东省所承担的研究项目“聊斋志异选注”的校勘和注释工作;后来,完成的书稿毁于“文革”。十年动乱后,重新对《聊斋志异》作选编评注和全书整理工作,先后整理出版《聊斋志异选》(合作)和《全本新注聊斋志异》(主编)两部书稿。1984年出版的选注本,选录长文百篇,每篇作祥注、简评。1989年出版的全注本,注文约八十万字,其底本和校本均用抄本,个别文字参校刻本,较之“三会本”,计增补“异史氏曰”八条,增补“附则”三条(至今修订版又新增一条),全书共收494篇,附录佚文四篇(修订版改为三篇)。《全本新注聊斋志异》是建国后,《聊斋志异》第一个全新注本,被收入人民文学出版社的“中国古典文学读本丛书”。

《聊斋志异》手稿是由蒲松龄后人捐赠给国家,现存于辽宁省图书馆,并已入选《国家珍贵古籍名录》。
作者简介
蒲松龄(1640—1715),字留仙,一字剑臣,号柳泉,世称聊斋先生,淄川(今山东淄博)人,清代文学家。早年即有文名,但始终未中举,直至七十一岁才援例为贡生。长期为塾师、幕友,郁郁不得志,所著文言短篇小说集《聊斋志异》在中国文学史上有重要地位。亦工诗文,著作有《聊斋文集》《聊斋诗集》。
