In1904,hewasborninAnCounty,Sichuan.Openedaprivateschoolwhenhewas7yearsold.Inhisyouth,heoftentraveledinandoutoftownsandvillagesinnorthwestSichuan,andwasfamiliarwiththecorruptionoflocalwarlordsandgentry.
