WilliamPetty(1623-1687),thefounderofclassicalpoliticaleconomyandstatistics,isalsooneofthefoundersoftheRoyalSociety.Pettywasbornin1623inRamsey,Hampshire,England-afamilyofpoortextileworkers.Asateenager,hestudiedGreek,Latin,mathematicsandastronomy,andalsostudiedanatomyinFrance.ObtainedadoctorateinmedicinefromtheUniversityofOxfordin1649.In1951,hewashiredasaprofessorofanatomybytheUniversityofOxford.HewaselectedasamemberoftheBritishParliamentin1658.In1661,hewasmadeabaronandappointeddirectoroflandsurveying.DiedinLondonin1687.
