Earlydevelopment
MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology(MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,MIT)isacomprehensiveprivateuniversityintheUnitedStates.ItislocatedinCambridge,Massachusetts(CambridgebelongstotheBostonMetropolitanArea,andtheBostonMetropolitanAreabelongstotheGreaterBostonArea).Thecampuscoversanareaof166acres.Bayarea(BackBay)separated.
TheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologywasfoundedin1861bythefamousnaturalscientistWilliamBartonRogers.HehopedtocreateafreecollegetocatertotherapiddevelopmentoftheUnitedStates.DuetotheCivilWar,MITdidn'tusherinitsfirstbatchofstudentsuntil1865,anditdevelopedrapidlyinthefieldsofnatureandengineering.DuringtheGreatDepression,MITwasoncethoughttomergewithHarvardUniversity,butundertheprotestofthestudentsoftheschool,itwasforcedtocanceltheplan.
Intermsofthename,thecorrecttranslatednameoftheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologyshouldbe"MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology",becausethetranslatednameoftheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologybeganintheQingDynastyandisstillusedtoday.InNorthAmerica,Institutereferstocollegesanduniversitiesofscience,engineering,technology,technologyorjuniorcolleges.
TheChinesenameofMIT(MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology)shouldbetranslatedas"MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology"accordingtotheacademicscaleandcomprehensivestrengthoftheschool,butpeoplehavelongbeenusedtotheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology(College)Of.ItisworthnotingthatsomepeoplewillconfuseMITwiththeUniversityofMassachusetts.Infact,thesearetwocompletelydifferentuniversities.TheUniversityofMassachusetts,alsoknownastheUniversityofMassachusetts(UMass),isalargemulti-campuspublicuniversityinMassachusetts.
Justtwodaysafterthedraftproposalwasapproved,thefirstbattleoftheAmericanCivilWarbegan.Theyearsofwardelayedtheschool'steachingandresearchwork.In1865,MITofficiallyopenedclassesonitscampusinBoston.Themissionofthisnewcollegemeetstherequirementsofthe"LandGrantAct",soitwasgrantedlandforfurtherdevelopment.In1866,thebenefitsoflandsalesenabledtheschooltodevelopintheBackBayarea.
"BostonInstituteofTechnology"isaninformalnicknamefortheMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology.TheuniversityadoptsthemodelofEuropeanUniversityofTechnology,andpaysmoreattentiontoexperimentalteachingintheearlystage.Althoughithasbeenplaguedbyfinancialproblems,undertheleadershipofFrancisSiamasaWalker,theschoolcontinuedtogrowinthelast20yearsofthe19thcentury,andthenopenedelectronics,chemistry,marineandcleanengineering,andbuiltThenewteachingbuildingwasopened,andmorestudentswerealsoabsorbed.
Universitycoursesaregraduallybecomingcareer-oriented,andtheteachingcontentlackssometheoreticalsciences.However,thisyounginstitutionisstillfacingafinancialcrisisandisreceivingattentionfrommanagement.Inthese"BostonTech"years,CharlesEliot,aformerfacultymemberoftheschoolandthenpresidentofHarvardUniversity,suggestedsixtimesthatMITshouldbeincorporatedintoLawrenceCollegeofHarvardCollegeatthattime.
MassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,locatedinthenarrowBackBayarea,cannotaffordfurthercampusexpansioncosts,butthenumberofstudentscontinuestorise,makingitincreasinglycrowded.Theschoolurgentlyneedsfundsordonationstomaintainnormaloperations.Intheend,theschoolacceptedtheinvitationtomergewithHarvardUniversityunderthestrongoppositionofteachers,studentsandalumni.However,in1917,theMassachusettsSupremeCourtbannedthemoveonthegroundsofanti-universitymonopolyandendedthe"mergerstorm."
In1916,theMassachusettsInstituteofTechnologymovedtothebankoftheCharlesRiverinCambridge,nearHarvardUniversity.Thecoaststretchesformorethan1mile(1.6kilometers).Thisisreclaimedland.This"NewPolytechnic"campus,fullofneoclassicalarchitecturalstyle,wasdesignedbythearchitectWilliamW.Bosworthandbenefitedfromthedonationofananonymous"good-heartedman"whohasbeenpayingTheschoolprovidesfunding.InJanuary1920,theidentityofthis"good-heartedman"wasrevealed-itwasGeorgeEastman,anindustrialistfromRochester,NewYork.Heinventednewmethodsoffilmmakingandediting,andfoundedEastmanKodakCompany.Between1912and1920,EastmanprovidedMITwith20millionU.S.dollars(currentvaluemorethan230million)incashandKodakstock.
InOctober2018,MITwilluseonebillionU.S.dollarstobuildanewartificialintelligencecollege,theMITSchwarzmanSchoolofComputer,dedicatedtoapplyingartificialintelligencetechnologytotheschool’sAllresearchfields.ThenewcollegewillopeninSeptember2019,andtheteachinglocationislocatedinanewbuildingscheduledtoopenin2022.TheMITSchwarzmanSchoolofComputerScienceisauniversity-wideentitythatwillcooperatewiththefiveexistingMITcollegestoestablish25"bridge"collegesasthekeylinkbetweenthetwouniversities.Atthisstage,itisexpectedthatMIT’sDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringandComputerScience(EECS),ComputerScienceandArtificialIntelligenceLaboratory(CSAIL),InstituteofData,SystemsandSociety(IDSS)andtheMITQuestforIntelligencewillallbecometheuniversityPartoftheuniversity,otherunitsmayalsojointheuniversity.EECS(especiallytheelectricalengineeringpartofthedepartment)willcontinuetobuildastrongrelationshipwiththeSchoolofEngineering.AseriesoffacultycommitteeswillbequicklyestablishedtodeterminetherelationshipbetweenEECS,theSchoolofEngineeringandtheNewComputerUniversity,andthescopeoffuturedegreeprograms.
