In1734,itwastheKingofEnglandandHanoverTheGrandDukeGeorgeIIdecidedtoappointhisimportantministervonMünchhausentoestablishauniversityinGöttingen,aimingtopromotetheideaofacademicfreedomintheEuropeanEnlightenmentera.TheUniversityofGöttingen(alsotranslatedasGöttingenUniversityorGöttingen)University)hasthusopenedupacultureofacademicfreedominEuropeanuniversities.Whentheuniversitywasfounded,therewerefourclassicdisciplines:theology,law,philosophy,andmedicine,withtheemphasisonnaturalsciencesandlaw.Throughoutthe18thcentury,theUniversityofGöttingenwasatthecenterofGermanuniversitiesduetoitsextremelyfreescientificexplorationspiritandatmosphere.By1812,theschoolhaddevelopedintoamodernuniversitywithacollectionof250,000booksandwasrecognizedathomeandabroad.Napoleonstudiedlawhereandsaidthat"GöttingenbelongstoallofEurope."
TheUniversityofGöttingenwasfirstknownforitslaw.Inthe18thcentury,thefamousGermannationallawmasterPetertaughthereforhalfacentury,andattractedalargenumberofstudentstostudy.AustrianPrimeMinisterClemensMetternichandthefounderoftheUniversityofBerlinWilhelmvonHumboldtwerehisstudents..Inthe100thyearofitsfoundingin1837,theUniversityofGöttingenwascalledthe"UniversityofLaw"becausealmosteveryyearthelawschoolenrolledstudentsaccountedformorethanhalfofthetotalnumberofstudentsenrolledintheschool.TheUniversityofGöttingenthereforebecametheMeccaofGermanpubliclawinthe18thcentury.
Thefamous"GöttingenSevenGentlemenIncident"occurredin1837.SevenprofessorsofGöttingenwereexpelledfromtheUniversityofGöttingenforopposingtheKingofHanover’sabolitionoftheconstitution.TheBrothersGrimmwerealsothereAmongotherthings,thisincidentreflectstheintellectualsinGöttingen’sloveforfreedomandthecouragetodefendtheConstitution.Sincethen,GustavHugoandEichhorntaughthereinthe19thcenturyandbecamethepioneersoftheGermanhistoricallawschool.Attheendofthe19thcentury,thefamousciviljuristJelling,whocreatedthetheoryof"contractnegligenceresponsibility",taughthere.
WhatmakesGöttingenaworld-renownedsciencecenterisitsnaturalsciences,especiallymathematics.Gauss,knownas"themostimportantmathematician",taughthereinthe18thcenturyandfoundedtheGöttingenschool.Sincethen,Riemann,DirichletandJacobihavemadecontributionsinthefieldsofalgebra,geometry,numbertheoryandanalysis.Bythe19thcentury,thefamousmathematiciansHilbertandKleinattractedalargenumberofmathematicianstoGöttingen,whichbroughttheGermanGöttingenschoolofmathematicsintoitsheyday.Bythebeginningofthe20thcentury,GöttingenhadbecometheindisputableworldmathematicscenterandMeccaholyland.Atthattime,theloudestsloganamongstudentsstudyingmathematicsallovertheworldwas"PickupyourbackpackandgotoGöttingen".
Fromtheendofthe19thcenturytothebeginningofthe20thcentury,theacademicstatusoftheUniversityofGöttingeninEuropeandtheworldreacheditspeak.Inthepasthalfcentury,thenumberofNobelPrizewinnersfromhererankseighthamonguniversitiesintheworld,creatingthe"GöttingenNobelMiracle".
Inaddition,OttovonBismarck,the"IronPrimeMinister"oftheGermanEmpire,RichardvonWeizseck,theformerPresidentoftheFederalRepublicofGermany,andGerhardSchroeder,theformerChancelloroftheGermanEmpireStudylawatTingenUniversity.ThegreatGermanpoetHeinealsoobtainedaDoctorofLawshere.TheBrothersGrimmtaughthereandwrotethefirstGermandictionary.PhenomenologymasterEdmundHusserltaughthere,philosopherArthurSchopenhauer,sociologymastersMaxWeberandJurgenHabermasalsostudiedinGöttingen.
Duringthisperiod,Germanuniversitieswereatthetopandmostgloriousperiodintheworld.StudentsfromEuropeanandAmericancountriesareproudtostudyinGermany,especiallytheUniversityofGöttingenandtheUniversityofBerlin.Atthattime,ifascholardidnothaveastudyexperienceinGermany,hewouldbeconsideredtohavenotreceivedcompleteacademictraining.Germanhasalsobecomeaninternationalacademiclanguage,andevenmanypapersintheUnitedKingdomandtheUnitedStatesaredirectlynamedinGerman.
However,theFirstWorldWarcausedalotofdamagetoGermanacademia,andtheinternationalacademiabegantobehostiletoGermanacademia.
DuringtheNaziera,Hitlercametopowerin1933andbrutallypersecutedJews.Between1933and34,about7,000peoplefromGermanuniversitiesfledtotheUnitedStates.By1940,Germanyhadlostmorethan500naturalscienceprofessors,450medicalprofessors,and300liberalartsprofessors,causingGermanacademicstofallbackdecades.TheUniversityofGöttingenwasalsofatallyhit,andalargenumberofwell-knownJewishscientistsandscholarswereforcedtoleaveGöttingenandgototheUnitedStates.
