ThepredecessorofPekingUniversityPresswastheTranslationBureauandBookEditingOfficeofJingshiUniversityHallestablishedin1902.ThefamoustranslatorandthinkerYanFuonceservedastheheadoftheTranslationBureau.In1917,PekingUniversitysetupapublishingdepartment.Itpublishedwidelyinfluentialpublicationssuchas"PekingUniversityJournal"and"GuoxueQuarterly",and"Pioneer",anagencypublicationoftheCentralCommitteeoftheSocialistYouthLeagueofChina.Italsopublished"China"byLiDazhaoandZhangRunzhi.InternationalLaw,YangChangji’sHistoryofWesternEthics,HuangJie’sPoetics,QianXuantong’s"LiteratureStudies",LiangShuming’s"IntroductiontoIndianPhilosophy"andothertextbooksandacademicmonographscompiledbyagroupoffamousscholars.In1952,thePublishingDepartmentofPekingUniversitywithdrew.In1979,withtheapprovaloftheNationalPublishingAdministration,theMinistryofEducationapprovedtheestablishmentofPekingUniversityPress,andthePekingUniversityPresswasrestored.PekingUniversityPress,whichhasreceivednewstudentsinthereformandopeningup,isacomprehensiveuniversitypublishinghousefocusingonhumanitiesandsocialsciences.Thepurposeofthesociety
istoadheretotheopenmodeofrunningasocietybasedonPekingUniversity,facingthewholecountry,andgoingtotheworld.BenefitsandeconomicbenefitshavebecomeauniversitypublishinghousewithimportantinfluenceandgoodreputationinChina.In1993,hewasawardedthetitleof"NationalExcellentPublishingHouse"bytheCentralPropagandaDepartmentandthePressandPublicationAdministration.In1994,hewasawardedthetitleof"NationalTeachingMaterialConstructionAdvancedGroup"bytheStateEducationCommission.In1995,hewasawardedthefirstbatchof"NationalAdvancedUniversityPublishingHouse"bytheStateEducationCommissionSociety"title.In2006,PekingUniversityPresswasnamed"2006TopTenMostCompetitiveIndustries"byChinaProductivitySocietyandChinaEconomicDailyAssociation.Bytheendof2006,PekingUniversityNewsAgencyhadwonatotalof824publicationawards,including34atthenationalleveland338attheprovincialandministeriallevel.
