History
ThecampusofBrownUniversityislocatedinProvidence,thecapitalofRhodeIsland.ItwasnamedRhodeIslandCollegewhenitwasfoundedin1764.ItwasaBaptistschoolthatonlyacceptedboys.Itwasclosedformanyyearsduetofinancialdifficulties.In1804,itacceptedthedonationofN.BrownforreconstructionandwasrenamedBrownUniversity.In1971,itmergedwiththePembrokeCollege,whichonlyacceptsgirls,andhasaco-educationalrelationship.Thecurriculumincludesbiologicalsciences,computerscienceandinformationsciences,engineering,art,mathematics,foreignlanguages,literature,psychology,naturalsciencesandsocialsciences,aswellasinterdisciplinarycourses.BrownUniversity(BrownUniversity)isauniversityaccreditedbytheMinistryofEducationofChina.

ItispreciselybecauseBrownUniversitygotridoftheshacklesofthechurchearlier,itwasabletoestablishitsownsecularschoolmissionsoonafteritsestablishment.Inanutshell,themissionofBrownUniversityincludestwoprinciples:oneistodiscoveranduseknowledge,andtheotheristointroducestudentsintotheknowledgeworldbymeansofeducation.Specifically,theguidingideologyofBrownUniversityis:thediscoveryandtransmissionofknowledgeareinevitableandintrinsicallyrelatedtotheeducationprocess,andthetwocomplementeachotherandbecomeone.Thefirstprinciplerequiresschoolstofocusonresearch,discoverknowledgeanddiscovertruththroughpersistentandperseveringresearch,andthenusethisknowledgeandtruthtobenefitmankind.Thesecondprincipleemphasizesthesocialmissionundertakenbyuniversities,thatis,tointroducestudentstothetempleofknowledgeandtruththroughthetransmissionofknowledge,cultivatetheirabilitytomasterhumanknowledge,andusethisknowledgetoservethesociety.Ifyoulookatthesetwoprinciplesintheabstract,itisresearchandteaching.Inotherwords,BrownUniversityhasmadeapositionforbothresearchandteachingforitsdirectionofrunningaschoolearlier.
Undertheguidanceofthisschool'smissionanddirection,BrownUniversitytriedtooffergraduate-levelcoursesin1850andformulatedrelevantrulesforgrantingmaster'sdegrees.Accordingtotheregulationsatthetime,afterundergraduatestudentscompletedtheirstudies,theycouldobtainamaster'sdegreeaslongastheycouldsuccessfullycompleteoneyearofgraduatecourses.Duetoinsufficientandcomprehensivepreparationconditionsinallaspects,thispostgraduateeducationprogramwassuspendedin1857.After30yearsofcarefulpreparation,BrownUniversityrestarteditsgraduateeducationprogramin1887,andaddedrelevantrequirementsforstudyingforadoctorateinthisprogram.TheeducationofmasteranddoctoralstudentsinthemodernsensehassinceofficiallykickedoffatBrownUniversity.Underthisnewprogram,themasteranddoctoralstudentsobtainedtheirrespectivedegreesin1888and1889,respectively.Afterenteringthe20thcentury,thegraduateeducationprogramofBrownUniversityhasbecomemorematureandperfect.Facingtheincreasingdevelopmentofgraduateeducation,BrownUniversityestablishedagraduateschoolin1902;in1927,thisgraduateschoolwasrenamedtheGraduateSchool,andBrownUniversitythusformallyestablisheditselfasaresearchuniversity.

Whatmakesthestudentsofthisschoolstunnedisthatthefailinggradeswillnotshowuponthereportcard,andonlyfourcoursesarerequiredinasemester(thisistheminimumrequiredcourseofallIvyLeagueschoolsof).BrownUniversity’sregulations(nearly“noregulations”tobeprecise),freecourseselection(cross-facultycourseselectionispossible),andthelackofrulesandregulationsofthiseducationalsystemhavewonittheloveofatleasttwogenerationsofundergraduatesAndloyalty.
