StanfordUniversitywasfoundedbythethenGovernorofCaliforniaandMember’srailwaytycoonLelandStanfordandhiswifeJaneLathropStanfordjointlyestablishedin1891.TheuniversityisbasedontheirsonLelandStanfordJr.whodiedoftyphoidontheeveoftheirsixtiethbirthday(1884).Inthenameandtocommemorate,LelandStanfordoncetoldhiswife:"AllthechildreninCaliforniawillbeourchildren."
In1824,theoldStanfordwasborninawealthyfarmer’sfamily.,ServedasgovernorofCaliforniain1861;in1863heandhiswifeJennyestablishedtheCentralPacificRailwayCompany,andStanfordservedaspresident.
In1876,theoldStanfordpurchased263hectaresoflandinCaliforniaasahorseranch,whichwaslaterexpandedto3237hectaresandbecamethesiteoftheStanfordUniversitycampus;intheStanfordUniversitylogoandsportslogoThereistheimageofsequoia.
In1884,hisbelovedson,Stanford,diedoftyphoidfeverwhiletravelingwithhisparentsinEurope.AfterthegrievingStanfordcouplereturnedtotheUnitedStates,theydecidedtosharehissavingsof20millionU.S.dollarswithhiminPa3561hectaresoflandinPaloAltowasusedtocreateauniversity.
OnOctober1,1891,StanfordUniversityhelditsopeningceremony.Atthattime,newspapersinNewYorkpredictedthatnoonewouldgotothewestofthewildlandtoattendthisuniversity:"Professorswillbeinthemarbleclassroom.Lecturesontheemptybench,"Butonthedayoftheopeningoftheuniversity,therewasanunexpectedbusyschedule.Therewere559maleandfemalestudentsinthefirstsession,two-thirdsofwhomwerefromoutsideCalifornia.

In1893,theoldStanforddiedinhissleep.Misfortunesnevercamealone,andhispropertywasfrozen.Undersuchdifficultcircumstances,Mrs.Stanforddidnotintendtoclosetheschool.Shedidherbesttokeeptheschoolrunninguntilthefundingfreezewascompletelyliftedsixyearslater.Mrs.Stanfordsoldherrailroadstockandtransferred$11milliontotheuniversity'sboardofdirectors.ThecrisisatStanfordUniversityfinallypassed.PresidentJordansaid:"Thelifeanddeathofthisuniversityareallbasedontheloveofakindlady."TheRisePeriod
Inthe1960s,whenitwasthesamepublicinstitutionintheSanFranciscoBayArea.WhiletheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyiswell-knowninacademicactivitiesandstudentsports,StanfordUniversityisstillunknown.Becausethefarmusedtotrainexcellentbreedsofhorseracingwasusedasthecampusoftheschool,andtheremotewestwasstilldesolateandclosedintheeyesoftheAmericans,peoplealsocalledStanfordUniversity"FarmUniversity"atthattime.
Stanfordtookoffafterthe1970s.ThisisalsoduetothelargeareaofStanford,morethan8,000acres,andthelargeareaofspaceavailablefortheschool,sothe1951projectThedeanofthecollege(FrederickTerman)putforwardanidea-thisistheturningpointofStanfordUniversity:onethousandacreswillbeleasedtotheindustrialandcommercialindustryorgraduatedalumnitosetupacompanyforalongtimeataverylowandsymbolicrent.Theycooperatewiththeschooltoprovidevariousresearchprojectsandstudentinternshipopportunities.StanfordbecamethefirstuniversityintheUnitedStatestoestablishanindustrialparkoncampus.Thankstothissuggestionoftakingoutthehugegainsinexchangeofland,StanfordputsitselfattheforefrontoftheUnitedStates:"Thecompaniesintheindustrialparkopenedoneafteranother,andsoontheyexceededthescopeofthelandthatStanfordcouldprovide,andexpandedoutward.The"SiliconValley"(alsotranslatedas"SiliconValley),whichhasformedCalifornia’scutting-edgetechnologyandtalenthighland.StanfordUniversityissurroundedbytechnologygroupsandenterprises,andisassociatedwithhigh-tech,business,andpragmatismandpioneeringspirit.Thesetypical"Americanspirits"Establishcloseties.Withtheriseofthe"high-techbelt"onthewestcoastoftheUnitedStates,variouscomputercompanies,includingthe"darlingofthecentury"Microsoft,havesetupcampsinthisline.StanfordUniversityhasbecomemoreandmoreimportant.Sincethen,StanfordUniversityhasbecomethecoreofSiliconValleyandtheworld.Thecenteroftechnologicalinnovation.

OnNovember6,1948,physicsprofessorFelixBlochbecamethefirstNobelPrizewinneratStanfordUniversity.
In1951,FrederickTerman,DeanoftheSchoolofEngineeringatStanfordUniversity,decidedtoestablishanindustrialparkonthecampus,rentingthecampuslandtothehigh-techcompaniesatthetime.Itisconsideredtobesuchamoment.ThisdecisionnotonlylaidthefoundationofSiliconValley,butalsocompletelychangedthestructureofStanfordUniversity.Forthisreason,hehimselfwashonoredasthe"FatherofSiliconValley."
August1959InOctober,theplanfortheradiotelescope"TheDish"begantobeimplemented.
OnJanuary1,1965,theDepartmentofComputerSciencewasestablished.

Asof2015,thenumberofarticlespublishedbyStanfordUniversityinNatureandScienceis1108respectively,1459.In2010,scientistsfromStanfordUniversityandtheNationalOceanicandAtmosphericAdministration(NOAA)foundthatcrudeoilinterferedwithfish’sheartcells,slowedtheheartbeat,reducedmyocardialcontractilityandarrhythmia,whichcouldleadtocardiacarrest,cardiogenicSuddendeath,arelatedarticlewaspublishedinthe"Science"magazineonFebruary14,2014.In2011,StanfordUniversityresearchersdevelopedanewtypeofsingle-cellPCRmicrofluidictechnologyandusedthistechnologytotreathundredsofcoloncancers.Cellswereanalyzedforsingle-cellgeneexpression,andamapofhumancoloncancerheterogeneitywasobtained.RelevantresearchresultswerepublishedinthejournalNatureBiotechnology.
In1967,theSLACNationalAcceleratorLaboratorywasputintouseandmademajordiscoveriesinelementaryparticlephysics.Thisdisciplineprovidedinsightintothebasiccompositionofmatter.This426-acrefacilityincludesatwo-milelinearacceleratorandhasapproximately1,300employees.Asof2018,atotalofsixStanfordphysicists-BurtonRichter,RichardTaylor,MartinPerl,etc.-wontheNobelPrizefortheircontributions.prize.
