Foundingperiod

In1746,foundedbytheChristianDawnPresbyterianChurchThe"CollegeofNewJersey"wasestablished,originallytotrainelders.TheschoolwasoriginallylocatedinElizabethtown,NewJersey.TheprincipalwasJonathanDickenson,andtheoriginalschoolnamewas"CollegeofNewJersey"(someoneproposedtonameitafterthethengovernorJonathanBelcher,butitwasrejected).ThesecondpresidentoftheCollegeofNewJerseywasAlanBulltheelder,andthethirdwasJonathanEdwards.In1747,thecollegemovedtoNewark,NewJersey,andin1756,theNewJerseycollegemovedtotheTownofPrinceton.

StanhopeHallwascompletedin1803.TheonlybuildingintheentirecollegeisNassauHall,namedHouseofOrange-NassauafterKingWilliamIIIofEngland.DuringtheAmericanRevolution,thecollegewasoccupiedbybothsides,andmanybuildingsweredamagedonalargescale.TheBattleofPrincetoninJanuary1777provedtobeacrucialbattleforGeneralGeorgeWashingtonandhissoldiers.TwoPrincetonianssignedtheDeclarationofIndependence.Inthesummerof1783,theContinentalCongressheldameetinginNassauHall,andthemeetingdecidedthatPrincetonwasthenationalcapital.Princeton'scapitalpositionlastedforfourmonths.IntheWarofIndependence,GeneralWashingtonfiredfiercecannonfireatNassauHallinordertoretakeitfromtheBritishinvaders,andtheravagedNassauHallmiraculouslysurvived;thetwofiresin1802and1855broughtitbackagain.ThelastremainingwallofNassauHallburneddown.ComparedwiththeoriginalworkdesignedbyRobertSmith,NassauHall,reconstructedbyJosephHenryLatrobe,JohnNotmanandJohnWitherspoon,hasmanyimprovementsandalotmorespaciousness.Overthecenturies,theroleofNassauHallhasevolvedfrommulti-functionalbuildings,officebuildings,dormitories,libraries,todedicatedclassrooms,totoday'sadministrativebuildings.Nowadays,thereisacannoninthebackyardofNassauHall.ItwasacannonleftbyWashingtoninPrincetonduringtheAmericanRevolution.Ofcourse,italsoleftWashington'saccurateevaluationofPrinceton:noschoolcanproducebetterscholarsandamorerespectableeducationthanhim.

PrincetonTheologicalSeminarywasseparatedfromPrincetonUniversityin1812,becausetheelderswantedmoretheologicaltraining,whiletheteachersandstudentswantedtheopposite.Thishasreducedthenumberofstudentsandalsoreducedoutsidesupportforaperiodoftime.

PrincetonUniversitybecamestagnantafterJamesMcCawsbecamepresidentin1868.Duringhis20yearsasaprincipal,thecurriculumwasunnecessarilycheckedandtheexpansionofthesciencecurriculumwasrestricted.McCawsalsosupervisedtheconstructionofaseriesofGothicRevivalstylebuildings.McCoshHalloncampusisnamedafterMcCorth.In1896,inordertoshowrespectforitslocation,theCollegeofNewJerseyofficiallychangeditsnametoPrincetonUniversity.Inthesameyear,thecollegealsounderwentalarge-scaleexpansionandofficiallychangedintoauniversity.DuringThomasWoodrowWilson'stenureasprincipal,Princetonaddedanewdiscussionandresearchcoursecalled"preceptorial"(1905).Thisveryspecialconceptatthetimereplacedtheoriginallargeclassroomcurriculumwithamorepersonalgroupdiscussionbetweenstudentsandteachers.

TheRisePeriod

In1969,PrincetonUniversitybegantoadmitfemaleundergraduatestudents.In1887,PrincetonactuallyopenedasisterschoolcalledEvelynGirls'CollegeonEvelynStreetandNassauStreet,anditclosedabout10yearslater.Yearslater,theschooldecidedtorecruitgirlsandworkedtomaketheschoolmorefriendlytowomen.InApril1969,whenPrincetonissuedaletterofacceptance,theseplanshadnotyetbeenfullyrealized.Princeton’s5-yearcoeducationalprogramallocated$7.8milliontorecruit650girlsin1974.Finally,148girls,including100femalefreshmenandothergirlsinothergrades,enteredthePrincetoncampusonSeptember6,1969duringmediaattentionandscrutiny.Asawell-knowncomprehensiveprivateuniversity,Princetonhaswell-knownprofessorsandscholars,top5alumnidonationsintheUnitedStates,acomputerizedmodernlibrarywithmorethan4.5millionbooks,acomputercenter,andanartmuseum.,Achurchandaconsiderablenumberofsocialandculturalvenues.Theschoolhasestablishedplasmaphysicslaboratory,geophysicslaboratory,JohnNormanSupercomputerResearchCenterandothermajorscientificresearchinstitutionsandgraduateschoolssuchastheSchoolofArchitecture,theSchoolofEngineeringTechnologyandApplication,andtheWoodrowWilsonSchoolofPublicandInternationalRelations.

PrincetonUniversityismostproudofitsundergraduateeducation,withateacher-studentratioof1/6,whichisrareinAmericanuniversities.Duetothesmallnumberofstudents,teachershaveenoughenergytocareforstudentsHomework.PrincetonUniversityundergraduatescanpursuetwodegrees:BachelorofArts(A.B.)andBachelorofEngineering(B.S.E.).Theformerisawardedtostudentsmajoringinhumanities,socialsciencesandnaturalsciences;thelatterisawardedtostudentsmajoringinengineeringandtechnology.

ThetutorialsystemisacharacteristicofPrincetonUniversity’steaching.Mostoftheschool’sbasiccoursesaretaughtinalargeauditoriumwith100to150people,buteveryweekstudentsparticipatein10to15peopleSmallclasses,ledbyprofessorsorassistants,reviewthelessonslearnedinthepastweek.Thesediscussionsledbyassistantsorprofessorsgivestudentsmorespacetounderstandthetheorieslearnedinclass.Theeducationalfeatureoftheschoolisthatundergraduatesneedtodoindependentresearchwork.AllcandidatesfortheBachelorofFineArtsmustcompleteanindependentpreliminaryreportprojectandanadvancedthesis;candidatesfortheengineeringmaster'sdegreemustcompletepreliminaryindependentresearchworkandalsowriteanadvancedthesis.

InJanuary2019news,PrincetonUniversityandGooglewillcooperateinartificialintelligencetechnology.

School-runningphilosophy

Itisdeeplyinfluencedbythehonorsystemofthewell-establishedWilliamandMaryCollege.PrincetonUniversityhasalsoinheritedthisgreatsystem.PrincetonUniversityundergraduatestudentsarerequiredtosignaguaranteeofacademicintegrityknownasthe"HonorCode."Thestudentswereaskedtowritedowntheoathof"IusemypersonalitytoensurethatIdidnotviolatetherulesofhonorinthisexam"ineveryexam.Thisregulationcarriesasecondobligation:duringtheentranceexam,eachstudentpromisestoreporttotheHonorCommitteeoftheStudentMaintenancewhenheseesotherstudentscheating.Duetothisregulation,PrincetonUniversityexamsarenotproctored.HomeworkisnotwithinthescopeoftheHonorCode,butstudentsoftenneedtowriteaguaranteeofnocheatingonthehomework.("Thisassignmentcompletelyrepresentsmyowneffortsanddoesnotviolateanyschoolrules.")Theschoolattachesgreatimportancetothecultivationofstudentcharacter.Since1893,ithasimplementedan"integrity"system,whereallwrittenexaminationstakenbystudentsAllareconductedundertheintegritysystem,thatis,thereisnoteacherinvigilatingtheexams,andthestudentsareallconsciousofit.Thissystemisbasedonthedraftingofthepledgeofgoodfaith,sothatstudentscanensurethattheyareresponsibleforhonestyandtheresultsofeachexam.Theschoolmanagementfullylistenstotheopinionsofstudents.Thereare4studentrepresentativesontheschoolboard,andtheschoolandthestudentstrusteachother.

Princeton’sadmissionsprocessisextremelystrict.AccordingtoTheAtlanticMonthly,PrincetonisthesecondmostrigorousuniversityintheUnitedStatesforadmissions,secondonlytoMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology.ToapplyforundergraduatestudiesinPrinceton,youneedtoprovide:(secondaryschool)transcriptsandlettersofrecommendation;foroverseasstudents,TOEFLscoresandGREscoresrequiredwhenapplyingforgraduatestudiesarealsorequired.PrincetonUniversitydoesnotonlyrefertogradeswhenadmittingstudents,butalsodependsonstudents’comprehensiveabilitiesandpotentials,interestinvariousacademicandnon-academicfields,specialtalentsandaptitudes,workexperience,lifeambitions,familybackgroundandotherfactors.Includeitinitsscopeofinvestigation.Theschoolevaluatesastudent’sexcellenceinfourindicators:mentalquality,includingIQ,learningability,creativity,etc.;characterquality,includingresponsibility,values,judgment,etc.;theabilitytocontributetotheschool;andThepotentialtoplayaleadingroleintheprofessionandthecommunityinthefuture.Princetonadmitsstudentsaccordingtotherulesthatdonotlookatthefinancialstatusofthefamily,butonlylookattheresultsofallaspectstoselectstudents.Princetonreadilyusedthedonationsreceivedtoreduceorexemptthetuitionfeesthatpoorstudentscouldnotpay,unlikeotheruniversitiesthatimposeaheavyloanburdenonstudents.Princetonbecamethefirst"noloan"schoolintheUnitedStatesin2001.Despitetheseregulations,Princetonstudents,asawhole,arestillthemostculturallyconservativeandtraditionalinthesameclass.However,moststudentsvotedfortheDemocraticPartyinthegeneralelection.Inordertochangethisoverallimpression,Princetonhasforciblypursueddiversity.PrincetonisamemberoftheDavisUnitedWorldCollegeFoundation.Internationalschoolsfromthisfoundationcangetassistancefromthisfoundationasneeded.

UndergraduatesofPrincetonUniversityenjoygraduateeducationandscientificresearchresources,whichcultivatetheabilityofundergraduatestoindependentlyengageinscientificresearchactivitiesandimprovetheefficiencyoftransformationfromtheoreticalknowledgetoscientificresearchresults.ThisisintheUnitedStatesandtheworldTherearefewprecedentsinthehighereducationsector.TheacademiclevelofeverysubjectatPrincetonUniversityranksamongthetopintheUnitedStates.Theuniversitydoesnothaveabusinessschool,alawschool,oramedicalschool.ThesethreecollegesarepreciselythemosteconomicallyvaluableandinfluentialcollegesinAmericanhighereducation.Princetonisdifferentfromordinaryuniversities,anditdrawsaclearlinefromthesmellofsnobbishcopper.Itconductsthepurestandmostbasicscientificresearch,whichrepresentsarigorous,solemnandpureacademicatmosphere.

TeachingMode

Princetonofferstwomainundergraduatecourses:BachelorofArts(A.B.)andBachelorofScience(B.S.E.).Accordingtotradition,anthropologystudentscanchooseadiscussionresearchcourseoratwice-weeklycourse,aswellasanadditionaldiscussionresearchcoursecalledpreceptorial,orpreceptforshort.ThissystemwasdesignatedbyWoodrowWilson,whowastheprincipalofPrincetonatthetime.Inordertograduate,studentsoftheBachelorofFineArtsmustcompleteagraduationthesisandoneortwoindependentresearchreports,called"juniorpapers".Theymustalsocompleteatwo-semesterforeignartssubject.BachelorofScienceandEngineeringstudentsmustcompletearigorousscienceandmathematicscourseandaminimumoftwosemestersofindependentresearch.

Princetonoffersgraduatedegrees(especiallydoctoraldegrees),whichareamongthebestinmanydisciplines;includingmathematics,physics,economics,history,philosophy,andarchitecture.However,unlikeotheruniversities,Princetondoesnothaveanextensivegraduateschool.Forexample,Princetonhasnolawschoolorbusinessschool.ThemostfamousprofessionalcollegeinPrincetonistheWoodrowWilsonSchoolofPublicandInternationalRelations,foundedin1930,formerlyknownastheSchoolofPublicandInternationalRelations,andchangedtoitscurrentnamein1948.Princetonalsooffersgraduatecoursesinengineeringandarchitecture.

Princetonisgoodattheoreticalacademicresearch.Theprofessionalcollegesofthecapitalistjobmarket:businessschool,lawschool,medicalschool,havenotbeenabletocompetehere.UniversalUniversityhaseliminatedtheadmissionopportunitiesofthethreemajorexpansionsoftheschool'sfundingsources,anditsacademicstylestillmaintainsatheoreticaltendency,andmaintainsthesimplicityoftheschoolstyle.ThisfeatureisunmatchedbyotherIvyLeagueschoolsorothernewlyemergingprestigiousschools.Inadditiontothethreeresearchschools(theSchoolofEngineeringandAppliedSciences,theSchoolofArchitectureandUrbanDesign,andtheWoodrowWilsonSchoolofPublicandInternationalRelations)withamaster'sdegreeinadditiontothePh.D.,theotherdepartmentsincludeNearEastandSovietStudiesandArt,Archaeology,MusicologyThedepartmentgrantsamaster'sdegree,anditdoesnotgrantamaster'sdegreebasedonitsoriginalintentionofcultivatingtheoreticaltalents.

TheGothicCuylerHallsofthecollegeisthestudentdormitoryinPrinceton.WoodrowWilsonproposedareformplanfortheexistingresidentialcollegesintheearly20thcentury.Duetothelackofsupportfromtheboardofdirectors,theplanonlyofficiallystartedin1968whentheWilsonResidentialCollegewasestablishedandaseriesofdietclubswereestablished.Theresidentialcollegesystemforthefirstandsecondgradesisoftenatopicofintensediscussion.FutureplansarebasedonthecompletionofWittmanResidentialCollege.TheWythesPlan("WythesPlan")proposedbytheschoolproposestoadd500undergraduatestudentsinthefuture,andthetworesidentialcollegeswillalsobeexpandedtomeettheneedsofgraduatestudents.ThesenewplansrepresenttheformalrealizationoftheWilsonplanacenturyafteritwasproposed.
